Protecting Your Personal Information and Data Privacy: A Guide for Libcare Members

At Libcare Medical Scheme, protecting members' personal information is a priority. While the Scheme and its service providers have legislated and contractual responsibilities to safeguard personal information, members also play an important role in protecting their data privacy, reducing the risk of fraud, identity theft and unauthorised use of their personal information.

Think Before You Share

Before providing personal, financial or health information or your consent to provide such information, ask yourself:

  • Who is requesting the information?
  • Why is it needed?
  • Is the request related to my membership or a service I have requested?
  • Do I understand how my information will be used?
  • Am I comfortable providing consent for this purpose?

If you are unsure, do not feel pressured to respond immediately. Take the time to verify the request.

Updates on broader healthcare developments, including the National Health Insurance (NHI), were also shared to keep members informed of industry changes.

Be Alert to Unauthorised Requests

Members may occasionally receive communications from healthcare providers, wellness companies, service providers or other organisations that create the impression that Libcare has endorsed a product, service or information request.

Before sharing any information:

  • Check who is actually making the request.
  • Be cautious if the communication uses the Libcare name or logo but comes from an unfamiliar source or has not been preceded by an authorised communication from Libcare.
  • Verify whether the request is genuinely connected to your Scheme membership.
  • Be especially cautious if you are asked for sensitive information such as medical history, identity numbers, banking details, passwords or one-time PINs.

If you are uncertain whether a communication is legitimate or authorised by Libcare, contact the Scheme before providing any information.

Direct Marketing and Your Personal Information

Libcare does not permit its service providers to use member information obtained through the administration of the Scheme for their own direct marketing purposes, unless this is permitted by law and only if the necessary consent has been obtained from the Libcare Board.

Be cautious if you receive unsolicited marketing communications that:

  • Suggest that Libcare has endorsed a product or service.
  • Imply that participation is linked to your membership or benefits.
  • State or suggest that your personal information was obtained through your Libcare membership.
  • Request personal, financial or health information for marketing purposes.

If you are approached in a manner that causes concern:

  • Do not confirm or provide additional personal information.
  • Ask how your information was obtained.
  • Request that your details be removed from marketing databases if you do not wish to receive further communications.
  • Report the matter to Libcare's Principal Officer for investigation.

Check Your Information Regularly

Members are encouraged to review their benefit statements, claims history and membership details regularly.

  • Claims for services you did not receive.
  • Incorrect personal or dependant information.
  • Unauthorised changes to your membership details.

Identifying concerns early can help prevent fraud, errors and misuse of personal information.

Know Your Rights

Libcare's Privacy Policy explains how the Scheme collects, uses, protects and shares personal information, as well as members' privacy rights and the process for raising privacy-related concerns. Members are encouraged to regularly review the policy available on the Libcare website.

Privacy Is a Shared Responsibility

By remaining vigilant, checking your records regularly and making informed decisions before providing consent, you can help protect your personal information and contribute to a safer environment for all Libcare members.

If something does not look right, pause, verify and contact Libcare before sharing your information.
